In this economy, when dollars are not stretching as far as they once did, it’s hard to rationalize spending money on anything that isn’t absolutely necessary. Although new floors are not usually do-or-die, nor are they the least significant redecorating expense, they do make a big impact and represent a worthwhile investment. So don’t worry! There are flooring options that can improve your space without breaking the bank. Keep reading for more details.

If your budget is limited, there are a few things to consider before settling on a material for your floor. If at all possible, using one floor throughout your space will not only cut down on your material cost, but it can also greatly simplify the installation- especially if you are paying someone to do that for you. The installer will only need to bring all the appropriate equipment once and continue to work until the job is done. In addition, using one floor throughout creates a streamlined look to your space, rather than a patchwork, unbalanced effect of using many types of materials.

When operating within a budget, one consideration is cost to value; in simple terms, will the cost of the improvement elevate the value of your home? Hardwood floors are fabulous when it comes to adding value, but they cost much more per square foot to install and finish when compared to other options, making them not necessarily “budget friendly.” The following floors are better options, when keeping your budget in mind.

Engineered Wood Floors

If it’s wood that you love, consider engineered floors as a more budget friendly option. Available in a wide variety of finishes, they are manufactured by adhering a thin veneer of actual hardwood to a core made of plywood. Excellent throughout living spaces, engineered floors have the look and feel of wood underfoot, and in most cases can even be refinished. As a bonus, they are not difficult to DIY, with some simple tools and know-how, which can save you money on installation costs.

Laminate Flooring

Consider using laminate as another great, budget-friendly option for flooring your living space. Like engineered floors, they are manufactured by adhering an “image layer” of wood floors to a core made from a variety of materials, some of which are wood based. Over the image layer is a wear layer that makes them durable to foot traffic and wear and tear. Laminates are also available in a variety of looks to suit your decor, from upscale to rustic, and are also easy to DIY. They are different from Engineered floors in that they are not real wood and cannot be refinished.

Luxury Vinyl Floors

The sweetheart of today’s floors, luxury vinyl is probably the most versatile budget-friendly option on the list. It is available in plank (wood-look) and tile. Like some of the above options, luxury vinyl is made by adhering an image layer, topped with a wear layer to a core. The major difference is that the core of luxury vinyl is made from inorganic materials (not wood). The entire plank or tile is waterproof and will never swell due to moisture or rot.

With the availability of both realistic plank and tile formats, the luxury vinyl design options are extensive. There are even luxury vinyl options that can be installed in a pattern, such as herringbone, giving your space a custom, upscale look. Many varieties can be scored and snapped with a straight edge and require no power tools, so they are very easy to DIY.
