Ready or not, the holidays are right around the corner! Hopefully you have made your list, checked it twice and at least started any gift shopping you may need to accomplish. Regardless of what holidays you celebrate, there are plenty of ways to prepare your home, so that it feels cozy, festive, and ready for company during this season. Today, we’ll look at how you can enhance your theme and protect your hard surface floors at the same time!

Area Rugs

One way to dress up your home is to use area rugs , which vary in size from large rugs that cover most of the floor, to smaller rugs. They can be layered over any floor, whether it’s a hard surface flooring or even wall to wall carpet. Consider swapping an existing rug under your dining room table, for one that echoes the colors of the season, whether you choose the traditional red and green or another color scheme.

You can do the same in your family room by adding a festive area rug to designate a conversation area. It doesn’t need to have Santa and his reindeer on it; you can opt for something classy or traditional if whimsical isn’t the right vibe. Area rugs can be found in a variety of piles, or thicknesses, and even fluffy shag, if you’d like to go with something more fancy and opulent.

Smaller area rugs can be used in a foyer or powder room to bring a fun holiday vibe to tighter spaces. Since throw rugs are very inexpensive, you might want to consider being a little bolder when choosing them, or select something that is seasonal, rather than holiday, and can be used for a longer period of time.

Runners

For a long area, such as a hallway or part of a room that is primarily used for foot traffic, consider purchasing a festive runner to lead your company from the door into your entertaining space. Choose a runner that is the appropriate length and be sure to use an area rug pad to secure it to your floor to help prevent rug slippage. Using the same guidelines as above, select something that echoes the holiday or season that you’d like to reflect in your decor. You can select something cute, fancy, or somewhere in between, keeping in mind how long you’d like to utilize the runner.
